Ps 37 1 Do not fret because of evil men
or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away."
The Psalmist is teaching that because of first sin God has taken complete control over society by blessing and cursing. When we are born we are in a broken relationship with God. The Psalmist says that God is angry with the wicked every day. The reformers teach that God is alienated from the wicked man. But at the same time even tho wicked are alienated they are still made in the image of God. They reason that since Gods elect are also corrupted with original sin then they cannot be the ultimate judges of the wicked. Love is overlooking the sin of the human race in order to show respect for the image of God in all men.
But the question is love suspending judgement in this life until the end of this time sequence? How can the elect respect the image by showing Gods love? So this is where I have a disagreement with the reformers. My question is what kind of love are they describing? The bible teaches that love is the fulfillment of the law. Does the bible teach that love is accepting wrong in order to show that we are no different because we are also sinners? In my understanding this is not love that is directed by the law but rather by the emotions.
But the teaching is that love is the fulfillment of the law. We cannot say then that we are charged with accepting offenses outside of the requirements of the law. In other words where ever love exist it is communicated in relationships by the active and passive obedience to the law. The definition of biblical love is relating to all men in complete compliance of the law. So we are taught in this Psalm that the only hope of being loved in the biblical way is for the law giver to treat us with the respect of the image of God by the substitution of Christ. Christ obedience made us worthy of being loved by Gods actions displayed in His law, covenants, curses, decrees, promises, and statutes. In other words the only love that is acceptable is the eternal love of God that show the true value of His elect on the basis of His actions to us in fulfilling His law. God does not love us with emotion but action.
So the Psalmist is addressing this question on how to show respect to Gods image in loving the wicked as sinners who cannot fulfill the law of God. We must first address the purpose of the law of God as it is given. The 10 commandments address how we are to love God and man. Whenever the Psalmist address the violation of the law of God, our vertical offenses are always direct horizontally. This is why in the Psalms salvation or deliverance is not only the personal reception of the gifts of God but also being translated into a kingdom of blessing. The entire scope of the love of God that is related in actions of God toward us and toward men must be ordered according to the eternal counsel of God in blessing and cursing. This is why he teaches us that all of our hope of knowing the love and care of God is understanding that God has predetermined to "cut the wicked off. " So the love of God is transferred in control of His kingdom in the defense of the curse and the promise of the blessing. The reality of the attributes are God transferred under the control of renewal.
Ps 10 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him;
in all his thoughts there is no room for God."....
16 The LORD is King for ever and ever;
the nations will perish from his land."
The saints are completely identified with Christ. But we live with men who redefine Gods law. When the wicked redefine Gods law they create a violent society.
From eternity past God designed the entire time sequence. The Psalmist starts from a presuppostional view point. Gods creation is the evidence of the perfect working of His law. Gods work in creation is the evidence of His authoritative word. When sin entered the world man began to redefine Gods perfect creation. In a sinless world all the things in creation would work together in the display of perfect unity and the highest enjoyment. But when all things were corrupted it created conflict.
But even tho sin brought corruption it did not thwart Gods purposes. When sin entered man began to redefine Gods law. We must understand that if the conditions of the world could lower Gods authority and ultimately bring complete destruction to Gods creation then the saints would have no hope. The question is if man redefines Gods law, is God unable to overcome the culture where men become their own gods?
God has established His authority not only by the original creation but by speaking all things into existence. So all of these generations that go back to the first one have implemented their redefinition of Gods perfect law. The Psalmist says that man devises his schemes on his bed. Then he begins to create the society from his view point by implementing new laws. When men change Gods law they introduce conflict into society. Every new generation that is born is caught in the cycle of the conflict of the prior generations that have created the law and added to it.
God gave His law to establish nations. Without Gods law the people could not be a nation. We call these kinds of societies rogue nations or depots. The question is if nations decline by establishing violence through many generations in redefinition of law then what remedy is given to Gods people?
This creates a moral confusion. If we are born in a world where we are responsible then we cannot be concerned about things that we cannot control. How can we have recourse of the evils that we face if they were devised and ruminated over generations that are already dead? The problem man is the lack of understanding and the narrow view in light of Gods knowledge about the whole process of creating the evils that we face. The world that we are born into is kind of like the cards that we have been dealt with. But as I have stated that this creates a problem with the purpose for which God made us and the frustration that we face in begin opposed by powers that are outside of our ability to change. This is the moral confusion.
This is why it is dangerous to describe the problems in our lives according to the cards that we were dealt. All evil prospers because people accept the social order that is created by the law of man. We could create a society by changing a law that would enforce a standard that is unnatural to man. So we all live being defined downward in accepting the present definitions of man in the social order. This is the problem that the Psalmist is trying to answer in this Psalm.
The Psalmist is breaking the mold of societies definition of man. He is saying that most of our problems originate from the redefinition of law since the beginning of time. In order for us to establish Gods kingdom on this earth we must begin to expand our view how we are being molded by the evils that have not been talked about in our generation. You see it is easy for us to only be concerned about the problems that we can control. But we must not deny the origins and the kinds of evil that we are in opposition to in our world. The Psalmist is saying that we do have a recourse for the evils that have been devised in the past that create our present culture. We are in the presence of a God who knows every new plan of man that goes all the way back to the beginning of time that has created the opposition that we must face in our time. God is satisfied because He views our problems from the beginning of the world. God has not questions. So God has made us like Himself. This is why we have a lot of questions. If we were satisfied with living according to the mold of the world then we would not ask questions. We would simply accept the standards. The problem is that God has not made us to just accept the status quo. He has made us to be satisfied with justice and equity. This is why He has given us the curse of the law. It is the eternal presence of Gods satisfactory justice. .
Ps 149 1 Praise the LORD . Sing to the LORD a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
let the people of Zion be glad in their King.
3 Let them praise his name with dancing
and make music to him with tambourine and harp.
4 For the LORD takes delight in his people;
he crowns the humble with salvation.
5 Let the saints rejoice in this honor
and sing for joy on their beds.

The christian life should be so good that we express our excitement in Gods wonders. God is busy recreating the entire world. We live in the beauty of Gods work of this recreation. We must engage our faith by speaking the law, covenants, decrees and statutes. Every minute that passes as activity being spoken into existence by God. He has placed His word as the supreme means by which we increase our faith in the unseen. All of these present movements that are decreed by God are mysterious to us. In Gods work there is no opposition. But we are opposed by our sin and corruption. God works in total freedom. He does exactly what He pleases. We apply our faith by opposing sin and corruption. Both the work of God and our active use of His word are without tension.
But at the same time we must not be afraid of the awful judgement of God that is spoken in His law, curses, and decrees. Just as that christian experience is filled with wonder so it is also fought with weapons that are very destructive to the opposition . So just as the Psalmist opens up with the wonder of Gods creation so He teaches this awful destruction that we must seek. 6 May the praise of God be in their mouths
and a double-edged sword in their hands,
7 to inflict vengeance on the nations
and punishment on the peoples,
8 to bind their kings with fetters,
their nobles with shackles of iron,
9 to carry out the sentence written against them.
This is the glory of all his saints.
Praise the LORD . So the first extreme pronouncements that encourage us to the wonder of Gods works are the covenants, promises, decrees and statutes. The awful destructive pronouncements are the law ,curses, and decrees. In practicing these two extreme prayers we are brought back into our original image of being Gods glory in ruling His creation.

Ps 109 16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,
but hounded to death the poor
and the needy and the brokenhearted.
17 He loved to pronounce a curse-
may it come on him;
he found no pleasure in blessing-
may it be far from him.
18 He wore cursing as his garment;
it entered into his body like water,
into his bones like oil.
19 May it be like a cloak wrapped about him,
like a belt tied forever around him.
20 May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers,
to those who speak evil of me."

We must understand the ot teaching on the curses. When God gave Moses the law it not only defined the standard but also the punishment. So each of Gods laws that are written down for Israel to follow are given with the pronouncement of a curse to those who fail to meet the laws requirements. When we are making a judgement on whether a curse is legitimate or false we judging every word that a person speaks. The Psalms teach that God has created all things by the word of His mouth. In other words the physical creation is a display of Gods attributes. It shows the way that the creator designed and worked in making the creation. Gods work meets the standard of the law which is why it shows the perfect symmetry, unity and beauty. If Gods creation could be destroyed or spin out of order then He would cease to be God. So we can say that all evil is a description that redefines Gods word. This is why sin is.." ra'a', wicked, injurious. From its root, which indicates its nature as breaking up all that is good or desirable; injurious to all others". Companion Bible
God must judge every word that is spoken by man. When Adam sin he began to redefine Gods word. The Psalms teach that God has spoken His word in laws , decrees, statutes, curses, covenants, and promises. God pronounces these parts of the law throughout the Psalms. The Psalms are Gods pronouncements that create the circumstances for Gods kingdom to advance upon this earth. God is showing how He designed and pronounced the creation into existence from nothing.
Now getting back to the curses. We must understand that any time we redefine Gods word we are creating disunity. The Psalms teach that one word that is deceptive is an attempt to introduce violence into the world. We can say that all violence and wars are caused by false teaching.Now here is the problem. Not only is redefining Gods word described as cursing ones neighbor but its not being able to have the ability to measure up to the standard of the law. Because the law requires that we promote the well being of our neighbor by enforcing the work that God has accomplished to support Gods purpose in creating our neighbor. If we failed to perfectly act according to the law then we are acting to prevent our neighbor from glorifying God. This is the standard in which the Psalms define "cursing" ones neighbor.
We must understand when Adam sinned he not only brought evil upon the human race but he sent the world spiraling down under the weight of the curse. Now think about this, since God made us to relate to one another in a way that our actions of love not only benefit our neighbor bur reflect upon our own health then why would anyone in their right mind treat their neighbor with contempt? It would result in self destruction. So this is why sin is so deceptive. Because when the human race spiraled down into the pit of the curse it brought in the inability to act according to the best wishes in creating the success in ones life. We are all in such a bad frame of mind that we curse ourselves.
God had to provide a remedy since man was unable to rise up to his original standard of success in enjoying Gods creation. God had to provide a substitute for His people. If the standard of the law was not met in the God Man then all men would be cursed to eternal destruction. But when Christ met the requirement of the law the judgement for breaking one law was silenced. Christ by His passive and active obedience silenced the curses. This is why Christ practically healed every person in the land at that time. Christ had to become a curse for us in order that we might enter into the covenant promises of grace and be blessed. In the Psalms there are only two types of people. Those who are cursed and those who are blessed.
The only confidence that we have as Gods blessed people is that we are righteous because of Christ incarnation and ascension into the heavens to be the King. The Psalms teach two kinds of curses. The law with the curses has not been abolished but rather upheld. You see here that the Psalmist is speaking a curse against those who have accused him. He describes the wicked as cursing the righteous. In other words because the wicked do not have Christ righteousness the curses remain on them. When the wicked accuse and attack Gods covenant people who are blessed the Psalmist describes this as an evil curse. Gods judgement on the language of the kingdom. But the here the Psalmist is not speaking his own curses but just repeating the curses of the law. God must uphold the curses of the law or the law would be nullified. We find the apostle extending the laws curses to the ends of the earth when he says Gal.1 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!"
Ps 56 7 On no account let them escape;
in your anger, O God, bring down the nations.
8 Record my lament;
list my tears on your scroll -
are they not in your record?
9 Then my enemies will turn back
when I call for help.
By this I will know that God is for me.
10 In God, whose word I praise,
in the LORD , whose word I praise-
11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
The Psalms teach that the two roads ...one of salvation and deliverance and the other of destruction and suffering are two different communications. Every person lives according to what he believes. There is no person even if he believes something that is not correct that will not die for that belief. But the problem is that those who are wicked do not understand that they live in darkness. Most of the troubles in this world are done by people who reason from blindness but will swear that they are right.
The bible calls living in this blindness a path of destruction. When man fell into sin the Devil presented an argument that was not entirely correct. He told Eve that she would have knowledge as God if she partook of the fruit. But it was knowledge that was under the power of sin. It was the possessing the curse. Man now knows guilt , fear, shame, and hate. The opposition to the success that man enjoys has created a war within man. That war is the presence of pain. The level of pain is the anger that man feels in fighting against the pain.
A lament is an expression of sorrow or regret. It is anger that is experienced as pain being rolled over to the God. The result of the experience of being opposed is to weep. Anger is a gift of God that prevents us from being consumed in our sorrow. But the anger that is sinful is selfish anger. This anger is the sinful way to deal with sorrow because it adds to the sorrow. In other words it is like the pain of a sore that we suffer from and if we are angry for the wrong reasons then we will infect that sore and cause more pain. We will add to the heat of the anger. But God has given us the way to use the anger to deepen our convictions.
We must learn that Gods wrath is without regret. Gods wrath is always completely justified. This is why anger is not uncontrolled outburst or sharp words that destroy. But Gods anger is who He is. Rom 9 33 "See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall,and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
When we are angry at God we just experience more destruction. His anger defines His hatred for violence. But righteous indignation is pleasurable in the sense that the anger is justified in the defense of Gods purposes. The righteous anger is not uncontrolled outburst but a having a lack of feeling as we experience the pleasure of being defended by God. But the inward struggle to unburden the anger is the lament.
When we are saved we go from being enemies of God ...who are at odds with God...to being friends of God. The Psalms teach that a friend is a friend of a friend of God. So there is no longer a difference of personal friendship and the community of friendship. As we are friends with our brothers we are kind to ourselves. The reason that we now are friends with God is because He has lifted the curse from us. Everyone in the community have been set free from the bondage of sin and death. Now listen...the curse of the law is the same as God coming to us first and addressing the problems we have with anger. In other words God shows His kindness to us by giving us a sure way to find relief in His justified wrath in using the curse to prevent us from being selfish with our anger. Gods love is always controlled towards us in His decrees from eternity past. He loves us as He loves Christ. He loves us justly. So the love is not emotional but legal. But we are always wanting to be loved emotionally.
The problem with being loved emotionally is that we approach God according to our present feelings. But the truth is that God never delays His response in meeting our needs according to the amount of emotion that is necessary to get a person to move. Rather God simply speaks and it is done. So too with Gods anger. God does not burst out with hot anger. But God simply speaks the judgement and it is as if it was always experienced as something that was decided in eternity past. If we pray to God and address Him according to His responses to the injustices of the world we will learn that it is always satisfied in the pronouncement of death. It is simply Gods avenging His own purposes. Its not boiling over. And if we approach God as a God who simply speaks and it is done then we are absent of the emotion that has no basis of our trust and we will be empty of our vain selfishness. Then the emotions will flow out of us. This consistent place of Gods justified creation will unite us to Gods presence in the word and Spirit. We will experience the overflowing love of God coming to us.

Ps 94 12" Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD ,
the man you teach from your law;
13 you grant him relief from days of trouble,
till a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the LORD will not reject his people;
he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,
and all the upright in heart will follow it. "
God has established His eternal government from before the foundation of the world in His eternal counsel. Everything that God creates and recreates works perfectly according to His law, covenants etc. God creates by acting to redeem everything that is corrupted. God opposes everything that works against His history of redemption. God acts positively toward the destructive actions of men in two ways. He curses evil rulers and the destructive actions that affect the nations.16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked?Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?17 Unless the LORD had given me help,I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death." ( The curse of the law is death to the nations, the retribution of God is life to His chosen people.) The second way is to bless His chosen people.
The history of the world is not a pragmatic explanation of all events. Rather it is a conflict of two opposing world views.94 21 They band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death". This Psalm is teaching that these two opposing views are two different governments.God has an eternal government that is described in pure redemption and man opposes Gods government by using His law to destroy his neighbor. This is represented by earthly rulers and Gods sovereign rule, 20 Can a corrupt throne be allied with you-
one that brings on misery by its decrees? 21 They band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death."
God rules over all people without opposition. Gods positive actions through His curse brings the rebellious rulers to a swift punishment and Gods positive actions toward His people in retribution is to turn the nations upside down. The world does not change through process. Rather God turns the evil upside down. Ps 94 12" Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD ,
the man you teach from your law;13 you grant him relief from days of trouble,till a pit is dug for the wicked" This negative action of the curse that God uses is the foundation of our faith. The truth is there is not hope changing through process. The only hope is for God to destroy all corruption by overturning all wayward nations. 14 For the LORD will not reject his people;
he will never forsake his inheritance.15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,and all the upright in heart will follow it". Gods people are fixed in a redemptive world in which everything they suffer because of the actions of wicked governments and people will be measured out and payed to them either in this life or in eternity,
All fear, anger, anxiety or shame are cursed dispositions. 17 Unless the LORD had given me help,I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.18 When I said, "My foot is slipping,"
your love, O LORD , supported me.19 When anxiety was great within me,your consolation brought joy to my soul". These cursed dispositions are enforced in us as we trust in any change that does not rise up to Gods absolute voice of destruction. This is why God has gifted us with His word that expresses His curse. We push the wicked curse away as we express Gods curse in the law. 22 But the LORD has become my fortress,and my God the rock in whom I take refuge". We pronounce destruction on the opposition that brings the future judgement into our present experience. 23 He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness;the LORD our God will destroy them"
As we become proficient in opposing all opposition in the curse we begin to experience the kingdom of God as if the full and final reversal of the corruption has already been accomplished even tho we still must face the present opposition. This kingdom confidence is the single thread that keeps us from lowering God and falling into the world of process. It is the only measure that shows that we believe in Gods absolute sovereignty over all things.
