Ps 143 1b in your faithfulness and righteousness
come to my relief.
2 Do not bring your servant into judgment,
for no one living is righteous before you.
The Psalmist is seeking Gods face. He is teaching that the only way to come into Gods presence is through substitutionary atonement. He is appealing to God on the basis of His righteousness and faithfulness. God led Israel out of Egypt as a fire by day and a light by night. When the Psalmist appeals to God as the light and the fire , He uses the twin attributes of God like righteousness and faithfulness, love and faithfulness,etc as the blessing of safety and wholeness produced by Gods presence and power as Israel crossed the dangerous terrain.
The twin attributes of God that create the future success of Gods people in their particular occupation are compared to the God who defends and protects Israels armies in the heat of the battle. The Psalmist is approaching the God who sits on the throne as the eternal judge of all governments as the law is applied from the beginning of time to the end. The defense and success of the Psalmist is dependent upon Gods covenant. The presence of the fire and the light as the only national defense in leading them to the Promise land is describing Gods unfailing love. The judge of the world is also the Father who swears to bless His people as they are present in this cursed world.
God has created all things according to His perfect law. The law of God is never changed or set aside. At all times God is absolutely just and right in His judgements. Gods wrath that is exercised in as He upholds His justice is radical to our corrupted understanding. God cannot acquit anyone lowering the standard of the law. God must desire and act with swift judgement against lawbreakers. This is why Gods answer to all of our corruption is to unite our desire for eternal justice with Him by cursing the curse. In other words the radical work of redemption not only provided Christ righteousness but it also turned the law away from us as the basis of swearing to His own hurt in order to defend His people. In this Psalm the judge who is our Father works to curse the curse by giving us an advocate who overcomes all of our opposition. This advocate is the Holy Spirit. 19b may your good Spirit lead me on level ground".
The Father judge is our sure defense because He has gifted His elect with the law in the same way that weapons were employed against Israels enemies. The Psalmist is teaching that all the victories that David enjoyed were the proof that Gods judgements against the wicked were enacted by His perfect law and in upholding His covenant.Anything short of total destruction of the Psalmist enemies would have lessened the desire in the Psalmist to trust that Gods law would be enforced. God curses the curse in order to build our desire of love for His law.
This Psalm answers the question of How can a sinner be confident that the law has become His friend and defense?And How can a sinner make absolute judgements against the wicked if He is guilty of breaking the law? But in Gods eternal counsel, He upholds His justice and works as our defense of the fire and light by cursing and blessing. Our salvation is a covenant ceremony of swearing to curse anyone who comes to God on the basis of their righteousness. Our desire of love of God and self are upheld by the curse. The law has been turned toward those who oppose our causes that are produced by the pronouncements. The pronouncements are enacted by the Holy Spirit who goes before us to make our paths straight. .11 For your name's sake, O LORD , preserve my life;
in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.
12 In your unfailing love, silence my enemies;
destroy all my foes,
for I am your servant.
