Ps 38 9 All my longings lie open before you, O Lord;
my sighing is not hidden from you."
The Psalmist is confessing his sins. He is acknowledging that his sin has led to the pain in his body and soul. He is teaching that sin brings guilt and guilt is the reason that he is in anguish. Not only has his sin brought about these personal struggles but his enemies have conspired to destroy him by exposing his sin in the public arena. This Psalm has been written to show the natural progression in our relationships with other people who are sinners. You see the sin that we struggle with put us in a vulnerable position in this world. We must understand that tho the law exposes our sins, it was never given in order for us to prosper in this violent culture. The Psalmist is not just acknowledging his guilt before God but he is fearful of those who are conspiring to overthrow him. He views the law as a standard in which God rules by the justice of blessing and cursing. The Psalms teach us the difference between Gods work in the remedy for sin and mans attempts to curse the righteous by using the sin as a weapon.
He is confessing the normal circumstances of living in this cursed world. Mans weaknesses and sins have resulted in creating a culture that is disjointed and out of order. Man was created to be a part of Gods perfect unity. All men were created to meet the needs of other men. There was no reason to be opposed in the garden because peace flourished in perfect unity. But sin brought violence into the world. This is what the Psalmist is s struggling with when he says" all of my longings lie open before you". Gods elect are saved into a relationship with a Father who is concerned about our needs. Our Father has given us new life in which we learn trust in His concern for our emotional health. Our salvation has not only given us victory over our enemies but it destroyed anything that causes us anxiety. Before we are saved our sins are piled up as the weight of the curse becomes to heavy to carry as we are heading toward judgement. The law of God is the weapon of judgment. But in salvation the law is the instrument of our Father in creating unity and perfect peace. The law becomes the secure foundation in which all of our corruption is reorder to bring all things together in the judgement. The Psalmist is longing for the day of judgment when the curse and blessing come together in its finality. You see we no longer struggle with sin and weakness in order to bring about personal redemption but we are in need of a universal salvation in which all things are brought into perfect unity.
