Rom 6 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with,F24 that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- 7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin."
The old self is the description we believed about ourselves. When God created the world , it was a perfect description of Himself. Every thing that ever exist is spoken by God. When man fell into sin , he introduced violence to Gods perfect order and beauty. Violence is the presence of the laws voice to sinners. Everything that was corrupted became the opposition to the new birth. When the bible describes the evil of man its always in the context of not being able to meet the standard of God or lacking the desire to think thoughts after God. The Apostle describes the inability for us to please God by desiring to live according to His perfect description in word and deed , he is using the term body of sin.
This is why I believe that when we are saved we are implanted with Gods word. The apostle is saying that everything that opposes Gods perfect description is cursed. This is what he means by we are no longer slaves to sin. In this sense we are a communication of Gods creation and He redeems and renews whatever is lacking in ability and desire. In other words died to sin is going from the condemning side of the law to judging through the law. When we died not only is our bodies and our spirits redeemed but we enter into a totally contained kingdom. The word that curses is yea and the word that blesses is yea and nay. A slave is under the domination of guilt shame and sorrow. But a freed person is able to destroy the opposition.
13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
The new man uses the law, decrees, statutes , curses , and covenants to control his desires. Our self control is the success we experience in destroying our opposition.Offer yourselves to God is like a sacrifice. This is the process by which we grow in the transforming of our minds. We grow through illumination and we are converted. So we experience going from death unto life in overcoming opposition through these gifts. Christ is our righteousness and He creates the perfect success that we in our corruption are always obtaining. He must overcome in order for us to obtain. So grace is giving us freedom to walk in a path that has already been made successful in Christ.
