Ps 17 3 Though you probe my heart and examine me at night,
though you test me, you will find nothing;
I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.
4 As for the deeds of men-
by the word of your lips
I have kept myself
from the ways of the violent.
5 My steps have held to your paths;
my feet have not slipped."
God created man to rule over the earth. He implanted His law in man in order to justify God in using these gifts in ruling through righteousness. Everything that man accomplished in the garden established perfect unity in relationships. If there was an written account of all of the communication in the garden it would be absence of violence and destruction. Man spoke and acted perfectly according to Gods law.
But the first sin in the garden was the evil communication of lawlessness.The serpent spoke destructive words by implying that God was not just in His commandments. When man sinned, he began to redefine Gods perfect law. Sin introduced the first act of destruction to Gods kingdom. The entire creation of God was in danger of total chaos. But the fall did not surprise God. Since God is God, He had decreed sin in His eternal counsel. God is God because He determined the beginning from the end by His decrees. Gods word was established before the fall, when man sinned on into the entire history of the world.All things that exist are determined by Gods word.
This is why the Psalmist is saying that his ongoing salvation is being created by Gods word. When we are saved we are implanted with the word of God. One revealed word of God contains all the words of Gods revelation. All the words in the bible are tied together on a string line. The Psalmist describes this unity of the word as perfect ordering of the peaceful kingdom. When the Psalmist is comparing the words of destruction spoken by the wicked with the words of the king, he is describing the difference between the way of blessing and cursing.
The Psalmist is describing the results of meditating on Gods word. The Psalmist is teaching that meditation on Gods word has kept him from the ways of the violent. Because Gods word reestablishes the kingdom of peace originally enjoyed in the garden. The is why the Psalmist says by the word of your mouth i have kept myself from the ways of the violent. How can meditation keep Gods elect from the way of the violent?
When man sinned he was motivated to establish his own righteousness. This is why the Adam covered his body with leaves. This desire of self righteous is motivated by guilt, fear, and shame. These cursed dispositions are a result of the fall. The teaching of self atonement is described by the Psalmist in the words. "He trust in the Lord, let the Lord deliver him."
The Psalms are pronouncements of law, covenants , curses, decrees, statutes and promises. These pronouncements are given to teach us the language of peace. When we meditate on the Psalms we learn that we are unable to atone for ourselves. The apostle says that our natural way of thinking is to defend ourselves and accuse others. Since we have been implanted with Gods law our thoughts are naturally geared toward complying with the law. The Apostle teaches that because of sin we are cursed by being enslaved to the law. By our inability to oppose this violent relationship we develop thought patterns that are cursed. But God has given us deliverance from this inward violence in dying to the law.
You see the law curses the violators. In the substitution of Christ , He became the object of the laws cursed judgment. We were the objects of the laws curse. But Christ took our place by dying to that power of the law to condemn us. Salvation is the death of the laws power to condemn His elect. This is why God responded to the curses of the law in the pronouncements of the curse to self righteousness. The apostle says that death is the beginning of new life. We must teach ourselves to have no hope in meeting the demands of the law by our efforts. God cursed the self righteous in order to disarm the weapon of guilt and shame that tempts us to work harder. We must trust in Gods curse in order to rest in His vengeance. We must learn to love the peace of Gods kingdom.
